Chapter Twenty

Mace

The fight was huge, big venue, big names, and big stakes. The Friday Night Fight had gained attention because it had been the sight of some incredible match-ups. Cable coverage made it so that anyone could see the fights. They were not title fights but the gut it out battles to get to the title fights.

It was where fight fans learned about the fighters they loved. It was how future champions earned their experience and reputations. And thanks to GWG and the 21C they’d become a major attraction every Friday in Grand City. Fighters traveled from pretty much anywhere to get a matchup.

Tonight’s fight was against Gustavo LaRocha out of Sao Paolo, Brazil. He was a top name in the game. Craddock Flynn had narrowly defeated him in the on the Tough to the Top show.

“Craddock’s beating turned Gustavo to what they call The Punisher. Damned nicknames in this sport, but he hasn’t lost since that fight with Craddock.” Whitey was diligent in getting Mace whatever information the coach thought his fighter needed to do the job. Mace did not say much but appreciated, more than he could express, Whitey’s knowledge and loyalty.

It was almost like a family. Yet he could not really let Whitey in.

“Yes, The Punisher sounds scary for sure.”

“Well don’t take it lightly; he’s knocked his last three opponents out of the sport for good. They have to eat dinner through a straw so watch it.”

“Oui.”

Gustavo trained out of the same gym in Brazil Mace had fled, Premier União Gym.

They hadn’t crossed paths, Gustavo was younger, greener, but mean. Mace eyed his opponent in his corner, Gustavo was ready to make his mark.

Gustavo’s style was the same as his, his training similar too. Mace had a small twinge of worry. He never doubted he could put anyone away in the octagon before but he was still thinking about Raleigh’s face. He was mentally wrung out. He knew he had a weak spot and hoped Gustavo didn’t find it.

Raleigh needed him to win. Mace knew anything could happen in a fight even if you were the most skilled fighter. A punch could knock you out, a kick could catch you in just the wrong spot, or a loss of focus and you’re in a submission hold praying a limb isn’t ripped off.

So Mace didn’t mess around. Promoters wanted a little drama. The best fighters, like Craddock Flynn, were performers too. Flynn could make you worry he was going down, you were invested in the storyline of his life, his loves, all of it.

His former sparring partner Zeke Powell understood that too, and his own personal drama became part of the reason fans rooted for The Preacher’s Son. The love triangle between Craddock, Zeke and Cassidy was part of the sport.

But Mace wanted none of it. He needed to assassinate Gustavo quickly. He had no stomach for fake drama. He wouldn’t be putting himself in a weak position even for a second if it meant danger for Raleigh.

The bell rang, and Gustavo’s dark eyes turned in his direction.
